CBD & Gut Health: What’s the Connection?

If you’re at all familiar with the health and wellness industry, it’s likely you’ve heard about the importance of gut health. Probiotics, prebiotics, and fermented foods are certainly hot topics. But why?

A mind-blowing fact is almost all the living cells in our bodies actually aren’t ‘human’ at all; they belong to the microbes that live on and within us. Approximately 38 trillion microorganisms live in our bodies, and the majority of these are in our gut.

What is the Microbiome?

It is a vast micro-ecosystem containing interconnected life forms. In your mind, imagine a busy city on a weekday morning, people commuting and rushing around to get to work or appointments. This is kind of like your microbiome!

It is often called a supporting organ because of the many key roles it plays in “promoting smooth daily operations of the human body.” Also, it is also called our “second brain” due to its profound influence on our bodies.

The Gut and the Brain

“The brain and the gut speak the same language.” – Ethan Russo, M.D.

It’s been discovered that the gut and brain communicate with each other, mostly via the vagus nerve, but also via the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

The ECS is primarily responsible for helping to maintain homeostasis in the body and its receptors are highly concentrated in the brain, gut, and pelvis. Digestively speaking, the ECS is involved in regulating food intake, digestive motility, nausea, intestinal inflammation, gut permeability, and intricate interactions with bacteria in the intestines.

How Can CBD Help?

According to Dr. Aimee Gould Shunney, a naturopathic physician and medical advisor to CV Sciences, “CBD is an immune modulator and a potent anti-inflammatory agent. In addition, it helps to balance the ECS, and therefore has tremendous potential to positively impact a variety of digestive complaints.”

CBD’s powerful anti-inflammatory properties can help create a healthy microbiome, which is good news for you and your brain.
