You may have noticed the rise in popularity of CBD, and for good reason. It has been demonstrated to relieve pain, reduce anxiety and depression, alleviate cancer-related symptoms, and could benefit heart health, just to name a few of the many benefits!
But for you to experience these benefits, it first needs to be absorbed properly by the body. Which brings us to the topic of this article: what is the best way to consume CBD so that it can be absorbed most efficiently in the bloodstream? The common answer is sublingual absorption, or under the tongue.
There are different ways to take CBD: sublingually, orally, inhalation, and topical application. For our purposes, let’s compare the bioavailability (a fancy word for absorption) for taking CBD orally versus sublingually.
If you take CBD orally, it is first absorbed by the digestive system. After it is broken down by your stomach, it then travels to your liver where it is broken down by enzymes even further. Only after this does it finally reach your bloodstream. In short, while taking CBD orally may be easy, the bioavailability of this method isn’t the greatest.
Let’s now turn to the sublingual method, a similar but different method.
By putting CBD oil under your tongue for 90-120 seconds, the mucus membranes in your mouth will absorb the compounds. This method completely omits the involvement of the digestive system and liver metabolism, thus enabling the CBD to reach your bloodstream much more quickly.
Research backs this up. This study compared the bioavailability of oral and sublingual methods in rabbits. Results showed that CBD administered under the tongue resulted in significantly higher bioavailability than taken orally.
How to Take CBD Sublingually for Best Results
Don’t let the sublingual process scare you – it really is easy! First, simply open your mouth and lift your tongue (it helps to be standing in front of a mirror!). Place the suggested number of CBD oil drops under your tongue using the dropper provided. Next, hold the oil under your tongue for between 90 seconds and 2 minutes.
Feel free to keep your mouth open and tongue raised or just close your mouth. The key here is to hold the oil so that it remains in contact with the membrane under your tongue for the suggested amount of time.
And that’s all there is to it!
If you really want the most bang for your buck with your CBD oil, try the sublingual method.
