WHAT IS HEMP OIL?
CBD hemp oil is extracted from industrial hemp plants, specially bred to contain high concentrations of naturally-occurring cannabidiol. CBD hemp oil doesn’t give you the “high” – simply because hemp doesn’t contain the psychoactive properties of THC.

- Hemp Oil
This oil has been extracted from the stalk of a hemp plant, mainly for its CBD content. Legally speaking, it must have less than 0.3 percent THC.
- Hemp Seed Oil
This has been extracted from hemp seeds, containing little to no THC or CBD, but is extracted for its healthy fatty acid profile.
- CBD Oil
In states where cannabis is legal, CBD oil can be made from Cannabis sativa or hemp and is made from the whole plant (including the flowering portion). In states where cannabis is illegal, CBD oil must be made from hemp, which is the stalks of the hemp plant.
- Cannabis Oil
This oil is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, containing CBD and. As of now, it cannot be purchased outside of a state that has not legalized the sale of cannabis. Cannabis oil also contains higher amounts of THC.
- What’s in Hemp Oil?
Since hemp oil refers to the oil extracted from the stalk of the hemp plant, the extraction process usually involves using a solvent to extract the oil from the hemp stalk.
- CO2 Extraction
In this method, the hemp is exposed to high-pressure, low-temperature CO2 gas that helps isolate and preserve the cannabinoids in the oil. However, this process takes long and high production costs.
- Ethanol Extraction
This method is safe and nontoxic in small amounts, but destroys the plant waxes, which may have health benefits.
- Olive Oil Extraction
Olive oil is safe and very cost-effective, but is not able to be made into a concentrate and has to be kept in a dark, cold environment to prevent rancidity.
- Butane or Hexane Extraction
This works great at extracting the cannabinoids from hemp, but some remain after the process and may be harmful to your lungs.
- Hemp Oil Safety
As it takes a large amount of hemp stalks to produce hemp oil, there is a risk of contamination of toxins contained within the plant due to hemp’s bio-accumulator properties that pull toxins from the soil hemp grows in. Many hemp oils reduce the full spectrum of terpenes and other cannabinoids that act synergistically with the CBD so that consumers end up receiving less of its benefit. However, it is also true that some brands – providing a third-party certificate of analysis – test and make sure that the CBD content, along with the terpenes and other cannabinoids, is up to par for their consumers to enjoy its full benefits. (The certificate shows the chemical composition of the hemp oil as well as if there are any unwanted contaminants such as toxic heavy metals.)
- Hemp Oil Uses
Hemp oil can be consumed in various ways: orally, applied topically or sublingually, or smoked via vaporization. Vaporization and sublingual application are the fastest means to consume CBD to elicit its effects in the body while pills and edible products can take 30 to 90 minutes for the CBD to kick in. Topical hemp oil can be applied directly to areas of pain or inflammation, or can be absorbed into the systemic circulation. (If choosing to use a vape pen, always check to make sure that propylene glycol is not used as a thinning agent because this chemical, when heated, can create formaldehyde, having carcinogenic properties.)
- Hemp Oil Benefits
As for the benefits of the CBD in the hemp oil, while there is still a need for higher-quality research studies, the available clinical evidence is very compelling that it relieves epilepsy, anxiety, pain, Alzheimer’s disease, among other conditions (including appetite, sleep, nausea, vomiting and depression).
